Winning Web Text

Copy Writing

Copy Writing is necessary in order to turn visitors into subscribers or buyers, or even to get people to stick around long enough to decide whether they are interested in you and your business.

So What is Copy Writing?

Copy writing is writing the text on your website that (hopefully) is compelling enough to engage people’s interest in your product or service.  If it is done well, it can increase the numbers of subscribers or customers your site generates.  If it is done poorly, it can certainly have a negative effect.

So How Do You Know What to Write?

When I need to write for one of my websites, I use Yanik Silver’s “14 Point Analysis of a Winning Site”.  This is a free ebook (and audiobook) that walks you step by step through the creation of good web copy.

It covers headlines, the first sentence, explaining the problem or challenge that your customer may be experiencing, and showing the solutions.

Each section of “14 Point Analysis of a Winning Site” is laid out in an easy to follow fashion, with an example from a website followed by both written and audio components.

Learn to Write Compelling Web Text

Whether you have a website yet or not, I encourage you to grab your copy of "14 Point analysis of a Winning Website" . This will help you to prepare your site for sales if your site isn’t up and running yet, or re-evaluate your writing if you’ve already started your online business.  If you do have a viable website, I recommend that you test out what Silver has to say and see for yourself if there are changes that you can make that will generate more sales or client interest.

Students often put the cart before the horse and get really excited about driving traffic to their sites before making sure that they are ready for customers.  I recommend the use of Yanik’s ebook to avoid this costly mistake!

Copy writing is very important. I have several sites, but have not followed any set formula when creating a new site. Your method of following the 14 points sounds ideal. I will have to use it for further reference. Thanks for the information.

If I follow the same 14 points others do, won't my website end up being a carbon copy of everyone else's sites?

The vast majority of people putting up web sites have no tool like this to help. So your web site will stand out.

Even if they do use the same ebook with the same tips to help them write copy, everyone's product, benefits, writing style and target audiences are different enough that no two sites would be exactly alike.

And this is a start to learning copywriting. True mastery requires continuing to learn and practice. People who make the extra effort to master copywriting will stand out.
